Chabraja Center for Historical Studies promotes scholarly engagement

Expanded opportunities for graduate fellowships and undergraduate research in historical studies cements Northwestern as a hub for interdisciplinary study of history.

Integral to the understanding of other disciplines, the study of history at Northwestern received critical support from University Trustee Nick Chabraja ’64, ’67 JD and Eleanor Chabraja, The Nicholas D. Chabraja Center for Historical Studies serves as a programming and resource hub for interdisciplinary scholarship and engagement with historical materials for faculty and students alike. The Center offers opportunities such as the Chabraja Postdoctoral Fellows program, designed for recent Northwestern history PhDs, and the Leopold Fellowship program, created to offer undergraduates a means to work closely with primary historical materials under the guidance of faculty, performing hands-on archival research and learning how to transform raw data into historical interpretation.

With the Chabraja Center as a source of additional opportunities and resources for scholars, the department of history has seen an increased success, recruiting top grad students and outstanding faculty. This gift also enabled the Center to host top scholars as lectures and visitors as well as offering the opportunity for graduate students and faculty to pursue their research around the world.
