Gift creates new degree and reinforces Northwestern as destination for creative writing talent

Thanks to a gift from Jennifer Leischner Litowitz ’91 and Alec Litowitz, the Litowitz Creative Writing Graduate Program is the first of its kind at a top-tier university.

As involved supporters of the arts and creative expression, Jennifer and Alec Litowitz knew a targeted investment in a program poised for influential prominence could bring Northwestern to the top of the field. Creative Writing in Weinberg College’s Department of English fit the bill.

The Litowitz Creative Writing Graduate Program offers a joint degree that delivers the artistic training of the MFA curriculum and critical thinking generated with the MA in English. This distinct program has intimate classes, and offers students the opportunity to pursue both creative and critical writing, and to receive mentorship from renowned faculty in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The curriculum gives students time to deepen both their creative writing and their study of literature.  Students receive full financial support for three academic years and two summers.  Both degrees—the MFA in Creative Writing and the MA in English—are awarded simultaneously at graduation.

“Through this inspired program, Alec and I hope to engage students from all different disciplines and backgrounds in this vital form of expression,” said Jennifer Leischner Litowitz, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Weinberg College with a bachelor of arts degree in English literature in 1991.
